What is a library in the immaterial age where historical books are digitalised, and new ones are e-books?
It is still a place of collecting and gathering, a place of exchange that draws people. It is a meeting point and a reference upon which a city orients itself. A library is a particular public space covered by a sense of culture and meaning. Nurturing various means of reading and working.
An all-encompassing hypothetical cube is placed in the middle of the site to be pulled and shaped by surrounding forces. It is moved towards a residential area on the North-East to form a formal entrance. Blocked by earth barriers towards South-East and Golf club on South-West, the cube is lifted four meters above ground to hover and open to the views. It is also made prominent for the views from two main Boulevards. The ground is pulled up by the cube as well creating four viewing slopes, a Formal entry stairway, Reading Vista towards Golf Club, a Formal Cherry tree park towards the kinder garden and a Sound wave landscape incorporating existing green buffer. The bottom of the cube is pitched for better views and created a shade on reading vista. On the top, it is pitched and turned towards the South creating a leaning slope for a reading roof garden overlooking Golf planes and the ocean.
The Resulting form alterations create vast public open space surpassing the site area by 120%.
The main building structure is composed of concrete core and structural steel floors.
The heaviest part of the library - bookshelves, are placed directly onto the concrete core, leading the rest of the library for the suspended lighter programs.
The library features six facades presenting itself to a viewer and a spectator as a hovering and levitating volume. The lower façade mirrors activities on the ground floor. Its sixth façade is a sloping roof garden with a 360-degree view. Four facades are made of glass with shading achieved by printing gradient made out of Korean literature and poetry. The words go from unrecognisable pixels to large scale almost like symbols. The poems, by this means, have a new reading, where a word is taken by the user to create a whole new meaning within the space of the library.
What is the public within the public library? It is a meeting point and the reference point where its space is enclosed or covered public space. A bookshelf within the open space is open for the public to dispose of its books for others to read as well as freely take books from the shelf. It is an instrument of material exchange and connection in the era of the digital world. The vast public space of the library is a place to go for undetermined and unexpected.
The bookshelf is the main and ever-changing design element of the building. As the core freely moves from bottom-up, inside-outside-inside-outside ending with a park on the roof, so are book shelves, being an integral design element. The uniform design leaves space as undetermined for its multi-functionality and expandability of existing programs and the future evolution of the library itself.
