New Belgrade is a city of realized urban utopias. Defined through urbanism and definite towards urban. Modern in its organization and structure, monumental in the form, function and material.
We proposed two building like parks, as an open extension of the Palace Serbia, framing its centrality, and 'tabula rasa' square with the Belgrade Philharmonic on it. If the urbanism of New Belgrade is a utopia that happened, then the sphere as a utopian form has the potential to be realized in New Belgrade.
To become an icon, the Belgrade Philharmonic Hall must take shape and form unique in relation to the context in which it is located, and at the same time, possess the performances and elements of urbanism in which it is built. A form that redefines the relation of functionality, efficiency and aesthetics into a unique system. It has to be unique and associative, to take the greatest risk for maximum potential.
It is a new icon for the new cultural strive in New Belgrade. Embracing the challenge of utopian spherical form. Sound sphere whose form is shaped by surrounding sounds.
We played with the soft sphere by embossing sound waves on its surface. A parametric model was devised, which allowed us to generate spherical form differing from each point of view.
